Considering how popular Octopath Traveler was on the Switch, it was inevitable that we would get another game at some point. However, the interesting thing here is that it is a prequel and will be released in Japan on Android and iOS devices.
Called Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent, it is using the same HD 2.5D setup as the first game. It will also be still set in Osterra but before the events of the original story and the characters from the Switch version will apparently appear in this new smartphone game as well.
What’s more, you will be able to use eight characters in battles and additional characters will also be unlockable and story related content will be added after the game’s release.
While the controls have been adapted for smartphone use, the really interesting thing about this new Octopath Traveller game is that despite being free-to-play with in-game purchases for certain items, it is still a proper singleplayer title.
For fans of the Switch version, you also need not worry that the series has moved over to smartphones. The team behind the games explained via the official Twitter account that production on the next console game will take a while, so they hope the mobile version will help tie people over.
Pre-registration to play this new mobile game is available now via the official site, with an early access demo released around March 12.
The catch with all this is that, at present, this is a Japan-only release. However, I think it is likely we will see this game come Westward at some point.
Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will be released for Android and iOS devices later this year in Japan.
